LAKEWOOD, Wash. (AP) — A short, high-speed chase through Lakewood ended with the fleeing car torn in half after crashing into a tree.

KIRO TV reports that police were backing away from the speeding car when the driver lost control, flipped his car and hit a tree. The car was completely torn in half with debris thrown around the street.

Police told KIRO that the driver remained in the car after it was torn, refusing arrest, but eventually was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital.
