WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Tuesday will announce plans for a yearlong study into how the military would lift a ban on gays from serving openly in the military and the impact it might have on the force.

According to U.S. officials, the study will be co-chaired by a senior Pentagon civilian and a senior uniformed officer.

In addition to the review, Gates will provide details on plans to loosen standards for enforcing existing rules. Gates was expected to say he would use as much legal latitude as possible when it comes to implementing the current “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, which is based on the 1993 law.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because details have not been publicly released.
