A teenage boy who spotted a fire on a deck outside his home and quickly reported it Friday afternoon helped crews with Fire District 3 hold damage to a minimum.

Firefighters were called to 18403 N.E. Lucia Falls Road, north of Battle Ground, about 3:40 p.m., said Deputy Chief Scott Sorenson.

With the home only a few miles from the station near Battle Ground Lake, crews quickly arrived and put it out.

“Finding the fire early on, before it got too big, made the difference,” Sorenson said.

The cause hadn’t been determined.

No one was injured, and estimated damage was less than $1,000.

Motorcyclist badly hurt in Orchards crash

A motorcyclist was seriously injured Friday evening in a crash on state Highway 503 near Northeast Padden Parkway in Orchards.

Rescuers were called to the scene shortly before 6:15 p.m. and found that the rider had hit a traffic barrier, according to preliminary information.

The rider, believed seriously injured, was rushed to an area hospital.

The crash blocked north- and southbound traffic as workers cleared the roadway and Washington State Patrol troopers investigated the scene.
