SEATTLE (AP) — The Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Sea is heading for a two-month scientific cruise in the Bering Sea.
The service says 25 scientists aboard the icebreaker will study the sea’s ecosystem and how it is being affected by climate change and reduced ice cover. Part of the research will include studying the distribution of the birds and marine mammals in the sea.
The trip that begins this week is part of a six-year study of the Bering Sea ecosystem supported by the National Science Foundation and the North Pacific Research Board.
