The Jaws of Life were used to extricate a man from his pickup truck at about 11 p.m. Wednesday after he crashed into a utility pole at the intersection of East Fourth Plain Boulevard and Caples Avenue, east of Falk Road.
Freed from the vehicle, the man was rushed to an area hospital, said Jim Flaherty, Vancouver Fire Department firefighter-spokesman.
The pickup truck’s dash and steering wheel were driven into the cab’s passenger seat.
The crash was reported at 10:57 p.m. and firefighters reached the scene four minutes later. Two units responded, including the department’s Heavy Rescue Unit.
Firefighters spent 45 minutes on the scene, Flaherty said.

The driver, David H. Friand, 60, of Vancouver was taken to Southwest Washington Medical Center, said Officer Dave Chamblee with the Vancouver Police Department. He was listed in satisfactory condition Thursday night.
