BAKER CITY, Ore. (AP) — The Wallowa-Whitman National Forest is embarking on its most ambitious trail-maintenance campaign in years.
Bolstered by $1.6 million in federal stimulus money, the Wallowa-Whitman plans to help hikers and horseback riders by trimming brush and moving downed logs off its more than 1,300 miles of trails during 2010 and 2011.
Wallowa-Whitman spokeswoman Judy Wing says some of the trails haven’t been maintained with any regularity for many years.
Private contractors will be hired to do much of the work, including almost 1,100 miles of trails in the Eagle Cap Wilderness and the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area.
