Local residents can learn to help their families and neighbors in emergencies such as earthquakes, fires, floods and terrorist attacks by taking classes offered by Fire District 6.

All-day Community Emergency Response Team classes will begin on Feb. 20, and continue for several more Saturdays at the fire station at 8800 N.E. Hazel Dell Ave.

For $30, students can learn about fire suppression, emergency medical care, search and rescue, terrorism and other topics, spokeswoman Dawn Johnson said in a bulletin.

Students must be 18 or older and must attend all classes.

After a disaster, firefighters and other rescuers could be overwhelmed with many victims, blocked roads and communications breakdowns, meaning that neighbors might have to look out for themselves and each other for several days, Johnson said.

To apply, stop by the station or visit http://www.ccfd6.org.
