EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A 23-year Postal Service employee who stole money from her employer to feed a gambling addiction and help support her adult children has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.

U.S. District Judge Michael Hogan also ordered 50-year-old June Marie Newburn of Joseph to pay restitution of more than $156,000. She pleaded guilty last September to one count of stealing government property.

At Wednesday’s sentencing in Eugene, Hogan told Newburn she had 60 days to surrender to the Bureau of Prisons.

Court records show she stole cash and money orders and collected fraudulent postal refunds for nearly two years. She voluntarily resigned after her embezzlement came to light during a 2007 audit. Her last postal position was as lead sales associate in Bend.
