Prairie’s win streak almost decade old

Sports fans and sports media can make too much of some of the numbers in our little world.

Some streaks are not that big of a deal. Some streaks are kind of cool. Then there are majestic sports streaks, ones the capture our imagination.

If Prairie beats Union on Thursday, then Sunday will mark 10 years since the Prairie girls basketball team lost to a Clark County opponent.

Battle Ground rallied from a 16-point deficit going into the final quarter, tied the game by the end of regulation, then beat the Falcons 52-48 in overtime. That was Jan. 31, 2000.

Nicole Wilcox led Battle Ground that night with 13 points, including two free throws to tie the game. Angela Manson added 11 points, including two crucial 3-pointers. And Susi Petersen had just three points, it was a 3-pointer in OT that turned into the winning points. Talk about a big shot. And now, because Prairie has not lost to a county school since that night, that shot is still being talked about today.

Prairie would end up winning the league and district titles that season and has just kept winning. The Falcons, in fact, have taken home a trophy from the state tournament every year since 1998.

After Tuesday’s victory over Columbia River, the Falcons have won 117 consecutive league games, 131 when including district tournament games. The number goes to 141 to include non-league games against Clark County opponents, and it’s 148 when including non-league GSHL teams outside of Clark County, such as Mark Morris or Kelso.
