PHILOMATH, Ore. (AP) — The Philomath School District is taking extra precautions after a registered sex offender visited a high school classroom.
Officials say 35-year-old Steven Routley used a fake name to sign in as a guest and speak at an art class last month at Philomath High. School Board Chairwoman Rose Cook says the teacher became suspicious and police were called.
Routley served prison time in Michigan for criminal sexual conduct with a person under 13 and was released last year. Police Chief Ken Elwer says an officer talked to Routley, but because he is not on supervision, his being at the school didn’t violate any laws.
Routley told the Corvallis Gazette-Times that he doesn’t recall using a fake name, but declined further comment.
