State audit critical of Seattle school district

SEATTLE (AP) — The state auditor’s office on Tuesday issued a sharply critical audit of the Seattle school district.

District officials say the findings that date back to the 2008-2009 school year cover some issues that have already been resolved, and others that school officials are working on.

The message to Seattle Public Schools from the state auditor is keep on improving the district’s internal financial controls.

The report notes some concerns that have come up in previous audits, including about $334,000 overpaid to employees because of mistakes made during conversion to a new payroll system. The district’s executive director of finance says some of this money has been repaid, some employees are on a payment plan and the district is working to recover the rest of the money.
