Forest Service proposes Martha Creek dam removal

CARSON — The Gifford Pinchot National Forest is seeking comment by July 23 on a proposal to remove a small dam on Martha Creek in the upper Wind River watershed.

The concrete dam is about 40 feet across and 7 feet high. The proposal is to drill holes into the dam, then blast the northern portion first. Once the dam is removed, the stream will be permitted to erode through the deposits that have accumulated upstream.

Removing the dam will allow fish to move into the upper portion of Martha Creek.

An environmental assessment will be published late this summer on the proposal.

Comments may be submitted to Erin Black, Mount Adams Ranger District, 2455 Highway 141, Trout Lake, Wash., 98650, or by e-mail to ekblack@fs.fed.us.

Her telephone number is 509-395-3411.
