JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South Africa says it will bid to host the 2020 Olympics.

In a statement released Tuesday, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee said it would “formally oversee a bid for the 2020 Games.”

SASCOC has invited potential Olympic host cities in the country to “state their intention of being involved in the process.”

SASCOC chief executive Tubby Reddy said the intention is to provide a world-class city capable of hosting Africa’s first Olympic Games in 2020.

South Africa’s announcement comes two days after the final of the first World Cup held in Africa.
