Vancouver weather watcher Steve Pierce, 37, was gratified by the results of the Weather Channel’s Ultimate Summer Beach Party contest. The contest invited viewers to submit one-minute videos on why they should win. Pierce didn’t win the grand prize — the chance to host the Weather Channel party July 25 — but he did win the hearts of viewers. As the fan favorite, Pierce will receive a $250 prize pack.

“To have been picked from a nationwide pool of entries is very exciting,” Pierce said. He serves as executive vice president of the Oregon chapter of the American Meteorological Society.

Pierce and his wife, Kristin, created a video of a dream sequence. Steve Pierce argued that Vancouver’s unseasonably cold and wet June makes the town deserving of a beach party. His video can be seen at http://iwitness.weather.com/_Ultimate-Beach-Party-Dream/video/1146206/148597.html.

A special program about the contest will air at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Wednesday on the Weather Channel, Comcast channel 47.

Maybe it’s a good thing Pierce didn’t win the grand prize. The weather channel crew would have showed up at his house to air a “party” to start at 8 a.m. — East Coast time. That’s 5 a.m. here.

Marshall students raise money for clean water

Thirty-three Marshall Elementary students auctioned their art at a July 2 show at the Academy to help kids in another part of the world obtain clean drinking water.

The students created pictures of flowers and fish using tempera paint and colored pencils as part of an art club at the school. Michelle Bigelow, 54, a paraeducator at Marshall, volunteers as the club’s leader.

All 62 pieces sold for a total of $2,440, which the students are donating to Living Waters International to help pay for a well in India.

About 400 people turned out for the auction, Bigelow said. The kids were especially excited that Vancouver Mayor Tim Leavitt attended.
