CASTELLA, Calif. — Sore-footed Camas hiker Jake Rose hopes to reach this town along Interstate 5 this weekend as he continues through northern California along the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail.

Rose was at Lassen Volcanic National Park late on Monday as he tries to walk the 2,650-mile trail from Mexico to Canada this summer. Lassen is 1,353 miles north of Mexico. He figured he can cover the 152 miles between Lassen and Castella in five days.

“My feel are really killing me,” Rose said. “The shoes I bought in Mammoth wore out in about five days and there’s no padding. I have huge blisters on each side of the heel. I cut out a chunk of the shoe to relieve the pressure.”

Rose had replacement shoes coming at Lassen park.

His tentative itinerary has him 11 days from entering Oregon. Rose said Oregon will take about two weeks to complete.

“It’s more mentally tough than physically tough hiking 12 hours a day, but I think I’m holding up,” Rose said.

A senior to be at Montana State University, Rose, 21, said he’ll hike until Aug. 29. Classes in Bozeman begin Aug. 30.
