Fred Meyer plastic ban won’t affect Clark County

Portland Fred Meyer stores will discontinue the use of plastic bags Aug. 1. But plastic bags will continue to be used at the company’s eight Clark County stores, according to Melinda Merrill, the chain’s director of public affairs.

The city of Portland expects to ban plastic bags altogether in 2012, which prompted Fred Meyer to discontinue plastic at its 10 Portland stores. The company might institute a similar ban at its Washington stores in the near future, she said.

The Fred Meyer retail-grocery chain is owned by Cincinnati-based Kroger Co., the nation’s largest traditional grocery chain, with some 2,470 grocery stores in 31 states.
