BEND, Ore. (AP) — Rocky Mountain goats are on Oregon’s Mount Jefferson for the first time in more than 100 years.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs released 45 goats on Tuesday on tribal lands along the Upper Whitewater River.
They came from the Elkhorn Mountains of Eastern Oregon, where about half the 800 mountain goats in Oregon can be found.
The department says mountain goats were wiped out in Oregon in the mid-1800s by a combination of too much hunting, severe weather and changes in climate.
