LONDON (AP) — Fulham has hired former Manchester City manager Mark Hughes, giving him a two-year contract.

The west London club opted for Hughes after Ajax last week refused to release Martin Jol from his contract.

Hughes replaces Roy Hodgson, who saved Fulham from relegation and then guided it to last season’s Europa League final. One of Hughes first tasks will be to persuade American midfielder Clint Dempsey to stay with the Cottagers.

Hughes enjoyed success in his first managerial position with his native Wales and then at Blackburn but was fired in December, midway through his second season with Manchester City, when the club’s wealthy owners began to doubt his ability to guide the team to a top-four finish.
