Share, the area’s primary provider of services to the hungry and homeless, is looking for community support as it competes for a grant to feed local children.
Share operates a backpack program that discretely sends weekend food home with kids who need it. More than 700 packs of food are distributed to 28 local elementary schools every Friday.
Now, Share is going after a $25,000 grant to support the program. The granting agency is Share Our Strength, a national nonprofit fighting childhood hunger.
Share is a finalist for the grant but needs computer clicks to win it. Supporters can vote once each day between now and June 10 at http://www.strength.org. Look for the “No Kid Hungry Innovation Awards” link.
Share executive director Diane McWithey said the $25,000 grant would be used to feed 5,000 local children and their families.
