PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Portland police officer shot in each leg during a May 12 traffic stop that ended in a motorist’s death says he wishes the man who shot him could have gotten the mental health assistance he needed.

Officer Christopher Burley spoke Thursday about the day he was injured, saying he was frightened as he fell to the ground, wondering if he’d still have the use of his legs. The 31-year-old officer also wondered whether his police career was over.

Investigation records show that after 25-year-old Keaton Otis shot Burley, other officers fired, killing Otis. It was the third fatal shooting by Portland police this year. A Multnomah County grand jury found no criminal wrongdoing on the officers’ part.

Otis’ parents say they had tried to seek mental health help for their son.
