BALTIMORE (AP) — Orioles pitching prospect Jake Arrieta will be make his major league debut Thursday as Baltimore’s starter against the New York Yankees.

The announcement was made Wednesday by Orioles interim manager Juan Samuel, who says the move will enable starters Jeremy Guthrie and Brian Matusz to secure an extra day of rest. Also, Arrieta will be pitching on turn following four days of rest.

Arrieta was drafted by Baltimore in the fifth round of the 2007 amateur draft. He is 6-2 with a 1.85 ERA in 11 starts and one relief appearance with Triple-A Norfolk this season. His lone relief appearance occurred Saturday.

Although Arrieta’s debut won’t receive the attention given to Washington’s Stephen Strasburg on Tuesday, the Orioles have long anticipated his arrival in the big leagues.
