Tutu says WCup to outstrip famed rugby win

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — Nobel Prize laureate Desmond Tutu believes the soccer World Cup starting Friday will do more to bring the South African people together than even the famed rugby equivalent in 1995.

The former archbishop and anti-apartheid campaigner said the upcoming World Cup has created twice the excitement of South Africa’s 1995 rugby World Cup win — an event that did much to reconcile blacks and whites in the country.

Tutu said the World Cup could be judged a success even before Friday’s opening game because it has proven South Africa could deliver the event despite strong initial doubts.
