SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) — A Springfield man has been arrested after police uncovered allegations he sexually abused underage girls dating back more than two decades.

A grand jury indicted Kirk Norton on charges of sodomy and sexual abuse. The 37-year-old was arraigned Thursday in Lane County.

The indictment lists four victims — all of whom know Norton and were younger than 14 when he allegedly abused them. The Oregon State Police says the alleged abuse of a fifth girl occurred in California.

The investigation began last year when an anonymous person called a Department of Human Services worker.

Norton made news four years ago when he accidentally backed over his 2-year-old daughter with a John Deere riding lawn mower. The girl’s injuries required the amputation of her left leg.

The Norton family sought millions in a suit against John Deere, but a jury decided last fall the company was not liable.
