WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama called the U.S. World Cup soccer team Thursday to congratulate them on advancing to the next round of the World Cup.

The U.S. team scored a last-minute goal Wednesday to beat Algeria and move on in the tournament. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said on Twitter that the president is hoping the team picks up another victory when they play Ghana on Saturday.

Obama met with the team at the White House earlier in the month to wish them luck before they traveled to South Africa for the tournament.
