DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Galen Rupp and Amy Begley each repeated as national champions at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The majority of Thursday’s events were for the junior outdoor championships, so the men’s and women’s 10,000 races took center stage.

Rupp won his second straight national outdoor title on Thursday night, winning in 28 minutes, 59.29 seconds. Begley beat hometown favorite Lisa Koll with a big kick about 500 meters from the finish and won in 32:06.45.

Erica McLain won the triple jump on her first try, in 46 feet, 614 inches.

Sanya Richards-Ross ran the 400 for the first time this season after straining her quadriceps at the Penn Relays. Richards-Ross, the defending world outdoor champion, qualified with a time of 51.91.
