KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) — Horse rescue organizations in southern Oregon say they’re seeing an increase in abandoned animals.
Nadine Hoy runs Project Spirit on her 25-acre property just outside of Keno.
Hoy says she has been taking “the worst of the worst” horse cases for the Klamath Humane Society at a rate of two or three horses a year for the past two decades.
But last winter, she had to care for 18 horses.
The Klamath County district attorney’s office says horse abandonment or neglect has become more prevalent in Klamath County since the start of the recession.
