DETROIT (AP) — The Tigers have placed hard-throwing reliever Joel Zumaya on the 15-day disabled list with an injured right elbow, one day after he was writhing on the mound during a game in Minneapolis.

The right-handed Zumaya squirmed and winced in obvious pain Monday night after throwing a pitch that Delmon Young fouled off with one out in the eighth inning of Detroit’s 7-5 win over the Minnesota Twins.

An MRI on Zumaya’s elbow was planned for Tuesday. Zumaya missed large chunks of the last two seasons because of shoulder problems.

The Tigers on Tuesday purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Casey Fien from Triple-A Toledo to take Zumaya’s place on the roster. He was expected to join Detroit in Minneapolis for Tuesday night’s game.
