DALLAS (AP) — Donnie Nelson says there is no backup plan if the Dallas Mavericks don’t re-sign Dirk Nowitzki.

The team’s president of basketball operations said Wednesday none of the other big-name free agents will be interested in the Mavericks without the team’s all-time scoring leader, who’s opting out of the final year of his contract.

Nelson spoke shortly before heading to the airport to catch a plane to Germany, saying “We’ll get this thing done.” He expects to be with Nowitzki when free agency opens at 12:01 a.m. ET on Thursday.

Nelson said owner Mark Cuban will be in Los Angeles, where he will have access to agents for other NBA stars considering new teams.
