TOPPENISH, Wash. (AP) — Yakima County sheriff’s deputies say one of their officers was shot at more than a dozen times by people he had stopped in a car near Toppenish.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Udell says the deputy was unhurt in the early Saturday incident. He tells the Yakima Herald-Republic that the deputy tried to stop a suspicious car that was slowly driving through a neighborhood. It wouldn’t stop — instead, two occupants leaned out and began firing. The deputy quickly drove off the road into a field, and Udell says he was unable to fire back.

Udell says the car was found burning about 45 minutes later. No arrests have been made.
