Judge dismisses UW faculty lawsuit over raises

SEATTLE (AP) — A King County judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by a University of Washington associate professor over faculty raises.

Peter Nye claims the university breached its contract last year when it suspended annual 2 percent faculty raises.

The UW argues that President Mark Emmert has the authority to suspend raises and that all the correct procedures were followed. Because of the need to cut the university’s budget, Emmert argued he didn’t have a choice about suspending faculty raises.

An attorney representing Nye told The Seattle Times the associate professor doesn’t agree with Superior Court Judge Carol Shapira’s decision issued Friday and they are considering whether to appeal.

The case has similarities to another pay raise lawsuit that UW faculty won in 2006.
