CRESCENT CITY, Calif. (AP) — A rock slide has closed a section of a rural Northern California highway about 15 miles from the Oregon border.
California Department of Transportation spokeswoman Julie East says 2,000 cubic yards of rock came falling down on Highway 199 near the community of Patrick Creek around 3:30 a.m. Monday. The two-lane road connects Highway 101 to Interstate 5.
East says one lane of the highway is expected to open by 2 p.m. Tuesday to one-way traffic in both directions.
Meanwhile, Highway 96 near the Humboldt-Siskiyou county line remains closed after an estimated 40,000 cubic yards, or 2,000 truck loads, of rock buried the roadway Feb. 27. East says she’s still not sure when the road will reopen.
No one was injured in either slide. Both are blamed on recent rains.
