GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Antron Brown is ready to return to the drag strip after his last run ended in a fiery crash that killed a spectator.

Brown is awaiting his first qualifying run at the rain-soaked Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla., the first NHRA event since Brown’s deadly crash in Phoenix last month.

Brown says he has received hundreds of e-mails and cards from fans offering support after his Top Fuel dragster lost a wheel and slammed into a retaining wall at Firebird International Raceway. Even though his machine caught fire, Brown escaped without serious injury.

But the left rear tire flew down the track, bounced into the grandstands and struck 52-year-old Susan Zimmer, of Rice Lake, Wis. She died at a nearby hospital.
