NEW YORK (AP) — Amir Khan knows well how fellow Brit Naseem Hamed used a win over a New Yorker at Madison Square Garden in his U.S. debut to attract new fans.

Now Khan wants to do the exact same thing. He’s coming to America to defend his WBA 140-pound title against Brooklyn’s Paulie Malignaggi on May 15.

In New York on Tuesday to promote the fight, Khan said Malignaggi “can make me a bigger star here.”

The 23-year-old Khan is 22-1 with 16 knockouts. He says that to expand his fan base in the United States, he must win with style.

Khan often talks to Hamed, who knocked out Kevin Kelley in 1997 to make his mark on the American boxing scene.

Former champion Malignaggi is 27-3 with five knockouts.
