Florence close to passing Old Town fireworks ban

FLORENCE, Ore. (AP) — The Florence City Council has moved closer to banning fireworks in Old Town.

The council voted 3-2 Monday night to prohibit the fireworks, even sparklers and smoke bombs. But because the vote wasn’t unanimous the council must revisit the issue next month.

If everyone votes the same in April, those caught using fireworks could face stiff fines.

Only those opposing the ban have spoken out in public. Leo Duwell, an Old Town business owner, says a ban will negatively affect an area the coastal city has historically promoted as a destination for the Fourth of July.

Duwell suggested hanging a sign that says: “Come to Florence and have no fun.”
