KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — When players check in at NCAA women’s tournament sites, they receive lapel pins that commemorate the round they’re playing in.
Tennessee guard Angie Bjorklund got six her freshmen year en route to the 2008 national championship. Last year she got only one as the Lady Volunteers bowed out in the first round. She kept that lone 2009 pin handy this season as a reminder of how little they achieved. This year, the junior wants a full set.
The top-seeded Lady Vols (31-2) have already made it one round farther than last season and will face No. 8 Dayton (25-7) in the second round on Monday.
The Lady Vols are trying to keep each other motivated as they work for more hardware. Coach Pat Summitt likes where her players are mentally as they head into what is the first second-round game for many of them.
