A three-year, $148,000 grant will pay for an after-school college readiness program at McLoughlin Middle School.

The new College Compass Club (CCC) will provide 40 income-eligible students access to tutoring services, service-learning projects, peer mentors, enrichment activities and field trips to local businesses and college campuses.

It builds on AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) college-readiness curriculum already in place at McLoughlin.

Southwest Washington Child Care Consortium (SWCCC) and Northwest Service Academy, both programs of Educational Service District 112, will operate the CCC.

This will be SWCCC’s first after-school program for middle-school students. The group operates 26 childcare centers in Southwest Washington, many in partnership between schools and community organizations.

AmeriCorps volunteers make up most of the Northwest Service Academy, with strong focus on service learning and the environment. Plans call for AmeriCorps members to help tutor and mentor students, plan field trips and arrange guest speakers.

The grant runs from August through July 2013.

Funding comes from College Spark Washington, a group that funds programs that help low-income students become college-ready and earn their degrees.
