Brynn Larson and Tasha Grinde won high-point honors, leading the Hockinson High School equestrian team to another state championship.

The Hawks finished first among about 20 intermediate-size teams during the Washington High School Equestrian Teams State Championships, which took place Friday through Sunday at Wenatchee.

Larson won four events and was the high-point scorer for performance events. Grinde earned one gold medal and one silver medal and was the high-point rider in timed events.

Larson’s wins came in the trail, huntseat, stockseat and as part of the Hawks in-hand obstacle relay team. She also took the bronze for driving and placed fourth in in-hand trail riding.

Grinde won the gold medal for steer daubing and placed second in the break away contest where her time was faster than the previous state record.

Joining Larson on the winning in-hand obstacle relay team were Nadine Miller, Lindsey Morris, and Amanda Gaudet. Hockinson’s Katie Surritt won gold in working rancher.

This is at least the fourth time in six years that Hockinson has won a team championship at the WAHSET state meet, according to Hawks coach Dale Waite.

Rugby teams reach finals

The Prairie Wolf Pack are making quite an impression as a first-year high school rugby team.

A 31-24 win over the Beaverton Barbarians on Saturday advanced Prairie to the championship match in the top division of the Oregon Youth Rugby boys high school league. Prairie will take on Eastside in the title match on Saturday at Delta Park. The time for that match is tentatively 2:30 p.m.

In the Oregon Youth Rugby Division 3 playoffs, Battle Ground defeated Camas to reach the championship match.

In the Division One semifinals, Prairie pulled away late to beat Beaverton. The Wolf Pack scored two tries and a conversion after the match was tied midway through the second half.

Jode de Klerk scored two tries in the match for the Wolf Pack. Duncan Marsh, Kyle Wiley, and Garrett Prestwich also scored tries for Prairie. Austin Riley kicked for two conversions, and Derrick Riddle made one conversion kick.

Tries count for five points apiece, conversion kicks for two points.

The Prairie team is in its first season as a stand-alone team. Many of its players were members of the Battle Ground Bulls in previous seasons, but those programs split this year because of growing interest in the sport.

Prairie coach André de Klerk called the spot in the finals “a nice, big surprise for us.”

But the coach said the experience provided by some of the Prairie seniors, and a competitive league season has helped the Wolf Pack find quick success.

“We have a good front row and exceptionally quick and good handling back line,” André de Klerk said.

Battle Ground 7, Camas 0 — Vincent Ganisson scored the try, with the conversion by Connor Taylor, as Battle Ground advanced to the Division Three finals. The Bulls are scheduled to take on Newberg at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Delta Park.

Man of the match for the Camas Mean Machine was Zackary Nute, according to Camas coach Aisea Vailea. Camas will cap its season with an exhibition match at Yelm Middle School at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Vancouver 69, West Linn 10 — The Vancouver Sharks earned fifth place in Division One of Oregon Youth Rugby with a consolation win on Saturday. Tries were scored by Shingai Masike, Tevin Wesley, Jason Tia Tia, and Anton Wyman. Conversions were kicked by Masike.

Lacrosse playoff Friday

The King’s Way Christian boys high school lacrosse team will host a state quarterfinal match at 7 p.m. on Friday at Columbia River High School.

The Knights will likely face defending state champion Issaquah, which plays Stadium of Tacoma on Wednesday in a first-round match.

King’s Way, which draws players from around Clark County, for the first time this season is playing in the top division of the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association.
