WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — The country that gave the world Shakespeare and Wordsworth is adding poetic flair to this year’s Wimbledon.
The All England Club said Tuesday they have appointed a “Championships Poet” to write a poem each day that sums up the matches and atmosphere of the grass-court Grand Slam tournament.
British comedian and poet Matt Harvey will be writing poems “on all things Wimbledon.” Wimbledon organizers said that includes everything “from the grass and its bounce to rain and the roof; strawberries and cream and all the unfolding drama of the matches and players.”
Harvey, an author and radio personality, said he’s “delighted” by the assignment, “with a little bit of healthy anxiety thrown in.”
