PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police say they arrested the driver of a 2003 Mercedes after the car topped 110 mph Friday on State Highway 26 in the Oregon coast range.

Police say a trooper tried to stop the westbound car near Milepost 33 after watching it speed past several vehicles. But then the driver sped up, passing other cars in heavy Memorial weekend traffic. Near Milepost 23, the Mercedes was boxed in due to the traffic. The driver pulled to the shoulder and stopped.

The trooper arrested 52-year-old Steven C. Johnson of Gresham for investigation of reckless driving and felony attempt to elude. The man told the trooper he didn’t stop because he was scared.
