TACOMA — Kyra Davidson kept trying to convince herself that it was real.

Her state championship medal is real enough.

Davidson, a sophomore at Hockinson, won the girls high jump title Friday at the Class 2A state track and field meet at Mount Tahoma High School.

About the same time Davidson was winning her championship, Columbia River’s Anna Adamko was winning her second state title in as many days.

Adamko won the Class 3A javelin competition in what could be described as the Clark County Javelin Invitational — four other girls from the county finished in the top nine.

Those were the highlights from Friday’s action in the Class 4A, 3A and 2A girls meets on a day when sideways rain took on the athletes head-on.

“Oh gosh, the weather was terrible and I was freezing,” Davidson said.

As the top seed heading into the event, she was the last to jump. That meant she had to watch all of her fellow competitors struggle.

“Waiting to jump was scaring me a little bit,” she said. “I wasn’t confident.”

Davidson gave herself a little pep talk.

“I just tried to tough it out, tried to think about getting over the bar,” she said. “I kept telling myself, ‘I can do it, I can do it. This is what I’ve been training for.’”

Davidson and Jennifer Nakata of Pullman each cleared 5 feet, 2 inches. Davidson cleared on her first try, while it took Nakata three tries. Both athletes missed at 5-3, and Davidson won based on misses.

“I was thinking I got first, but then I thought, ‘First in state? That can’t happen.’ This is crazy,” she said. Moments after the award ceremony, she clutched her medal.

“I just think it is so amazing,” she said. “I am proud of it.”

It was no surprise Adamko won. This is her second consecutive state title in the javelin. Her discus title Thursday gives the junior three state titles, and she has a chance at sweeping this year’s throwing events when she competes in the shot put today.

Adamko’s javelin traveled 133-8, beating Kelly Besmer of Mount Si, who finished second at 129-0. Adamko was thrilled with the state title but frustrated with her mark in the trying conditions.

“It’s definitely not fun. It’s definitely a challenge,” she said of the weather. “Mostly, it’s a pain … because I couldn’t see very well. I can work with the wind, but the rain …”

Caitlin Bower of Camas finished third at 114-1. Felicia Odle of Union was fifth, Johna McEllrath of Prairie was sixth, and Angelique Williams of Union took ninth.

Next up for Adamko is the try for the trifecta.

“Now that javelin and discus are over, I’m more relaxed,” she said. “I’m not going to put too much pressure on myself.”

Kelley Young of Washougal passed an opponent in the final 10 meters to finish second in the 2A 100 hurdles. Kelly Nigro of Woodland finished fourth.

“Just being here, making it to finals is unbelievable,” Young said. “Unbelievable.”

Shelby Williams of Ridgefield finished third in the 2A shot put. Heidi Greear of Washougal ended up sixth.

Whitney Swenson of Battle Ground finished sixth in the 4A 100 hurdles.

Friday also was the final day of preliminaries, setting up all finals for today.

Rachel McQuivey of Skyview had the fastest qualifying time in the 4A 300 hurdles. Brina Sych of Union will be seeded No. 2 in the 3A 300 hurdles. Sara Slayton of Camas is fourth.

Lynelle Decker of Mountain View (4A) and Jessica Bottelberghe of Columbia River (3A) had the second-fastest qualifying times in the 800.

Tee Tee Martin of Heritage, with the third best time, is in the final of the 4A 100. Williams and Alex Coons of Woodland advanced to the 2A 100 final.

Nigro of Woodland was fourth in qualifying for the 2A 300 hurdles.

Megan Kelley of Camas (3A) and Elle Wade of Washougal (2A) qualified for the 400 finals.

The Woodland relay team made it to the 400 finals.
