INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis 500 fans were feeling the heat Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Speedway spokesman Paul Kelly says the air temperature above the paved surfaces at the speedway was 96 at 2:30 p.m., while the surface of the loop itself was 131 degrees.

The National Weather Service says the official temperature in Indianapolis was 88 degrees at 3 p.m.

Many fans were finding relief in the shade under grandstands or at misting stations around the track. Others weren’t so lucky.

Tammy Barrett of Columbia, Mo., took her 60-year-old mother to the track’s infield hospital after she showed signs of heat exhaustion.

Barrett says her family’s seats inside the second turn were “miserably hot.”

The hottest Indy 500 in history was 92 degrees in 1937.
