PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Preliminary results from a telephone poll of Oregon voters show that men favored the Republican candidate for governor, Chris Dudley, while women tended to support his Democrat rival, John Kitzhaber.
The survey shows Kitzhaber fared well with voters in households reporting more than $100,000 in income, while Dudley drew some support from voters with union members in the household.
Two-thirds of those polled chose the economy as the most important issue facing the nation, over health care, the war in Afghanistan and illegal immigration. More than eight in 10 said they were at least somewhat worried about the direction of the national economy over the next year.
The telephone poll of 1,052 people was conducted for The Associated Press by Edison Research from Oct. 22 to Oct. 31.
