MIAMI (AP) — Tomas has weakened to a tropical depression but is expected to regain strength as it heads toward Haiti, where it could hit as a hurricane.

The depression’s maximum sustained winds early Wednesday are near 35 mph (55 kph). The National Hurricane Center in Miami says it’s expected to get stronger over the next two days.

A hurricane watch has been issued for Jamaica.

The depression is located about 410 miles (660 kilometers) south-southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and is moving west-northwest near 5 mph (7 kph).

Tomas has already killed at least 14 people and left seven missing in the eastern Caribbean nation of St. Lucia. In nearby St. Vincent, the storm wrecked more than 1,200 homes and caused nearly $24 million in damages to crops.
