STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — The past, present and future of Penn State football blended together at Beaver Stadium to create one memorable night.

Lost in the hype over coach Joe Paterno’s 400th career victory were standout performances by younger Nittany Lions on both sides of the ball that could bode well for the rest of this season — and beyond.

Penn State rallied from 21 points down to beat Northwestern 35-21 on Saturday night. Sophomore quarterback Matt McGloin came off the bench to throw four touchdown passes, while freshman running back Silas Redd had 131 yards rushing and the go-ahead score.

Redd combined with senior tailback Evan Royster, who had 134, to form a one-two punch on a suddenly explosive Penn State offense.

A trip to No. 8 Ohio State (8-1, 4-1 Big Ten) is next for the Nittany Lions (6-3, 3-2).
