3 marine reserves recommended along Oregon coast

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Community advisory groups are recommending three more marine reserves on the Oregon coast at Cape Falcon south of Cannon Beach, Cascade Head near Lincoln City and Cape Perpetua near Yachats.

The Oregonian reports the reserves would provide a refuge for fish and allow experts to gauge the effect of fishing on fish stocks.

The state’s first two reserves are scheduled to take effect next June: Redfish Rocks near Port Orford and Otter Rocks near Depoe Bay.

A study of the three proposed reserves was ordered last year by the Legislature.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will evaluate the proposals and make a recommendation to the governor who is expected to ask the Legislature next year for the designation.
