SNOHOMISH — After more than 87 minutes of scoreless soccer, Sheaffer Skadsen collected a corner kick and knocked into the back of the net to push Skyview over Snohomish in a Class 4A girls soccer state quarterfinal match on Saturday.

The golden goal with 2:41 remaining in the second overtime puts Skyview (15-1-3) into the state semifinals for the first time in school history.

Both teams had plenty of chances before Skadsen collected Brittany Wilson’s corner kick and shot the ball just over the outstretched hands of Snohomish goaltender Melissa Dreves.

“As the (ball) came through, there was a scramble in the air for it,” Skadsen said. “It flicked through to me, and I volleyed it into the goal.”

Skadsen, a junior forward who has made a verbal commitment to play at Arizona as a defender, had one shot hit the post in the first half and just missed on several other chances as Skyview applied constant pressure throughout the second half.

“Their keeper made some good saves so it was starting to get frustrating for us,” Skadsen said. “We just had to keep our heads up and convert and that’s what we did. That’s the way soccer goes. You just have to keep working until it goes in. The goal was just a great ball crossing by Brittany Wilson and I was just there to clean it up on the far post.”

Skadsen, who also scored the only goal in Skyview’s 1-0 win over Eastlake in the first round, ended this one with the 10th shot on goal of the game for the Storm. Snohomish had eights shots, but all were turned aside by Hannah Johnson who collected her second straight shutout in the playoffs.

“(Snohomish) had three really good shots on goal,” Johnson said. “But I was able to react quickly and get to the ball. There forwards are pretty good, but our defenders did a good job to keep the shutout going.”

Snohomish coach April VanAssche said this was not the outcome her team was expecting.

“But their goalkeeper was very strong and had some one-handed saves in the first part of the game that were just amazing,” VanAssche said. “It’s frustrating to take shots that should go in and don’t. That’s just the way soccer goes, but our forwards stayed with it and kept working hard and I’m very proud of them.”

Johnson said she was trying to get herself ready for a potential penalty kick shootout when Skadsen scored the game-winner.

“I was hoping it didn’t go to a shootout, but I was getting myself ready for that,” Johnson said. “I couldn’t really see what was happening (in front of the Snohomish goal). There was this scrum for the ball, and then Sheaffer put it in. And then everyone went wild, screaming and crying. It was almost like we were in a dream.”

The dream continues Friday for Skyview when the Storm takes on Kentwood in an 8 p.m. semifinal match in Lakewood.

Skadsen, who hit the post in the 26th minute of the first half, now has four goals in Skyview’s last three wins.

“This is our year,” she said. “If everyone comes out hard and plays their best, we really think we have the team to win it all.”
