Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation has been awarded a $46,761 grant for playground equipment at Douglas Carter Fisher Neighborhood Park in East Minnehaha and the Hazel Dell sports fields project.

Both parks are scheduled to start construction in early 2011. The grant was awarded by GameTime, a manufacturer of commercial playground equipment, the department said in a news release Wednesday. The grant will be used to provide a one-to-one match for local funding.

“Providing fun and safe places for children to play close to home is a vital component of a healthy community,” Pete Mayer, Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation Director, said. “This grant will allow us to get a bigger bang for our buck and build even better playgrounds at these parks.”

Douglas Carter Fisher Neighborhood Park is located at the end of N.E. 54th Street, east of 49th Avenue in East Minnehaha, and is currently undeveloped. Construction is scheduled to be complete in fall 2011. The Hazel Dell sports fields and neighborhood park will be located on N.E. 78th Street, about a quarter mile west of St. Johns Road. Construction is scheduled to be complete in early 2012.

Both parks are being developed as part of the Greater Clark Parks District program, which was approved by voters in the unincorporated urban area of Clark County in 2005. For more information about the parks district, or either park, visit www.clarkparks.org.
