BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) — Defensive back Payton Ploch ran for two touchdowns as Lamar’s defense and special teams combined for most of the scoring in a 44-6 win over Panhandle State on Saturday night.

Ploch scored in the second quarter when the Cardinals (5-6) blocked a punt return and he ran it back 15 yards. He scored again in the third when he picked up a fumble by the Aggies (6-5) and ran it 29 yards.

Ploch’s TDs came after Marcus Jackson ran a punt return 90 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and Ryan Clark ran an interception 75 yards for the score.

The only touchdown for the Cardinals’ offense came when Kwabena Asante made a short dash for a score in the first quarter. Lamar’s Justin Stout nailed all three of his field goal tries.

The Aggies held off a shutout when Kevi Lauchland hit Doug Williams for the touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.
