Try This: Seasonal events kick off

Today is the last day to check out plein-air landscape paintings by Barbara Szkutnik and Gretha Lindwood at downtown Vancouver’s Aurora Gallery.

The plein-air style involves artists working outdoors, compensating for light and scenery changes as they happen. Lindwood is showcasing new pastel and oil paintings of the Pacific Northwest landscape and waterways. Szkutnik is displaying new pastel paintings.

Hours: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

The art exhibit is one of several weekend entertainment options in Clark County and Portland. Others include the popular Festival of Trees, a chance to find the perfect Christmas tree thanks to Chelatchie Prairie Railroad and the ZooLights attraction at the Oregon Zoo.

1. Festival celebrates the season

The Vancouver Rotary Foundation’s Festival of Trees showcases Christmas tree displays and family activities this weekend at the Pearson Air Museum.

Local entertainers and youth groups will perform holiday music as visitors browse the tree displays, which will be set up amid the museum’s vintage planes.

Other festival attractions include a fun run and race. Complete details are available online.

When: Tree viewing and family activities, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

2. All aboard for Christmas trees

Visitors can take a train ride through north Clark County with the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad this season to find the perfect Christmas tree. Douglas fir, grand fir and noble fir trees will be available for purchase.

Santa Claus will be on hand, and refreshments will be served.

When: 9:30 a.m., noon and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4-5, 11-12 and 18-19.

Where: Chelatchie Prairie Railroad, 207 S. Railroad Ave., Yacolt.

Admission: Family four-packs, which include tickets for four and a tree, cost $55-$75, depending on the tree purchased.

Tickets for additional passengers are $15; $14 for seniors 60 and older; $10 for children 5-11; $8 for children 2-4; and free for children 1 and younger.

Additional trees are $20-$40, depending on the tree purchased.

3. Drive through a Winter Wonderland

The popular Winter Wonderland attraction is open for the season in Portland.

The drive-through light show features more than 250 displays and 12 themed areas. Displays include the Twelve Days of Christmas and Santa Claus taking off from an 84-foot ski slope.

When: Through Dec. 26; 5-9 p.m. Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; and 5-11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Where: Portland International Raceway, 1940 N. Victory Blvd., Portland.

Admission: $16 per car; $18 per passenger van with eight or more people; $20 per limousine, RV or motor home; $30 per mini bus with 16-25 people; $45 per bus with 26-40 people.

Discounts are available for mini buses and buses on Wednesday nights.

4. Oregon Zoo lights up the night

More than 1 million lights will illuminate the Oregon Zoo as part of its annual ZooLights attraction, which is now open for the season. Displays include life-size animal silhouettes and light sculptures. Lighted attractions include characters from “Alice in Wonderland” and “The Wizard of Oz,” hippos, elephants, a dangling anaconda and a 35-foot-long Chinese dragon.

More than 100 schools, churches, professional groups and dance troupes will perform holiday musical selections throughout the duration of the festival.

When: Through Jan. 2; 5-8 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays, and 5-8:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

ZooLights will be closed Dec. 24-25.

Where: Oregon Zoo, 4001 S.W. Canyon Road, Portland.

Admission: ZooLights package tickets, which include admission and a train ride, are $10.75, $9.25 for seniors 65 and older, $7.75 for children 3-11 and free for children 2 and younger. Admission-only prices are $9, $7.50 for seniors, $6 for children 2 and younger.
