KUUSAMO, Finland (AP) — Andreas Kofler defeated fellow Austrian Thomas Morgenstern to win the first individual World Cup ski jump event of the season.

Kofler amassed 331.2 points on the large hill at Kuusamo with jumps of 145.5 and 143.5 meters on Sunday. Morgenstern trailed his teammate by 2.9 points. Reigning World Cup and Olympic champion Simon Ammann of Switzerland finished third.

The win rounded off a successful weekend for Kofler, who also was part of the Austrian squad that won the team event Saturday along with Morgenstern, Gregor Schlierenzauer and Wolfgang Loitzl.

Schlierenzauer went into the final round in fourth place but finished 14th after a poor second jump.
